Supremacy and importance of love amongst Christians.
Rather than engaging in foolish arguments or boasting about human leaders, Christians should make love their priority
Loving one another through patience, kindness, and forgiveness is the core of true faith in Christ.
Belonging to Christ is demonstrated by loving others as Christ loved us. God's love for us overrides any possible condemnation, so we must reflect that grace to others.
Overall the primary message is that Christians should be united by sincere love, rather than divided by quarrels over doctrines, opinions or church leaders. Love fulfils the heart of Christ's teachings and identifies us as His disciples.
As Christians today, we must make love our priority. The Bible instructs us "not to quarrel or get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments" (2 Timothy 2:23). We are meant to live together in harmony as brothers and sisters in Christ. Too often we divide into factions, arguing over doctrines, words and human leaders. But Scripture says "everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God" (1 Corinthians 3:22-23). Our focus should be on God's love and Christ's finished work, not petty disputes.
We must love one another, being kind, forgiving and avoiding quarrels. Jesus commanded that we "love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34). This is how the world will recognize we are His disciples. Do we exhibit God's love to our spouse, children, friends and even enemies? Or do we harbor anger and malice? Our faith in Christ should compel us to love and forgive all people.
Boasting about human leaders divides the body of Christ. As Paul wrote, "Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?" (1 Corinthians 1:13). We belong to Christ alone, not any individual pastor or teacher. Loving one another in humility is the proof we are truly following Jesus.
God's incredible love for us "reports" against any possible case for our condemnation, breaking the power of sin and guilt. "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). God's love rebuts all arguments against us through the cross of Christ!
1st Corinthians 13 defines real love - patient, kind, not envying or boasting. Let us examine our lives in light of this picture of love. Our goal as Christians is not to win arguments but to live out God's loving salvation through faith in Christ. As the Bible teaches, "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8).
PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
We come before you to reflect on this teaching about the importance of love between Christians. Forgive us for the times when we have argued and quarreled rather than showing patience and kindness. Help us to live as true disciples of Christ, united in love for one another.
Lord, you have demonstrated Your perfect love by sending Jesus to die for our sins. You look beyond all our faults and welcome us into Your family. Give us hearts of compassion to love others in the same selfless way. Remind us that nothing can separate us from Your love.
Guard us against boasting in human leaders and guide us to rest our faith in Christ alone. May our words and actions clearly reflect Your love so that the world will see we belong to You.
We pray for the unity of all believers, that Your Church will be defined by love, not divided by quarrels. Knit our hearts together by the power of Your Spirit at work within us. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, who taught us to love one another just as You have loved us. Amen.
